The Estates Department is essential to ensure healthcare can be delivered efficiently and safely by operating and maintaining the physical environment of our hospitals and offices. The main elements being the maintenance of both building fabric and services for example external and internal finishes, fittings and fixtures, plumbing, electrical and mechanical services, piped medical gases etc.

Modern Apprenticeships in Estates

We offer various Modern Apprenticeships roles including maintenance joiner, plumber, mechanical engineer, and electrical engineer.

What will you gain from a Modern Apprenticeship role in Estates

You will gain valuable skills and experiences, mentorship and guidance throughout the Modern Apprenticeship programme and depending on which programme you are on you will work towards the following:

  • Plumbing Level 7
  • Painter and Decorator Level 7
  • Maintenance Engineer Level 7
  • Maintenance Electrician Level 7
  • Joiner Level 7

There are many opportunities within NHS Lothian, and once you have completed your apprenticeship, the Workforce Development will be available to support you onto your next step.

Interested in applying?

To be considered for a Modern Apprenticeship in Estates, you generally would need the following. However, this may vary between apprenticeships, so it is important you read the job advert thoroughly.

  • To be 16 to 24 years of age (or 29 if you are care experienced or you have a disability).
  • 3 National 4s in Maths, English and a Science/Technical subject at C grade.
  • An NPA SCQF Level 5 in various subjects would be considered for some programmes.
  • Have a passion for working in a healthcare environment and to progress within NHS Lothian.
  • Demonstrate NHS Lothian values.
