Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are a fantastic opportunity for anyone between the ages of 16-24 years old, or up to 29 years of age if you’re disabled or have care experience, to start your career within Healthcare.

It allows young people to earn a wage while learning essential skills and gaining experience within their role to develop their chosen career.   By completing an Apprenticeship with NHS Lothian, you will gain an accredited industry-recognised qualification and the opportunity to continue your development within your chosen career pathway.

What Apprenticeships does NHS Lothian offer?

NHS Lothian offers several Apprenticeship opportunities every year in a variety of different specialities.  Some examples of the areas you can undertake an Apprenticeship is:

  • Nursing
  • Prosthetics and Orthotics Technician
  • Healthcare Science
  • Pre-Registration Pharmacy Technician
  • Pharmacy Support Workers

  • Dental Nursing

Apprenticeships – Key Facts

  • Entry requirements include having National 4, National 5, or Highers depending on the role you are applying for
  • Durations of Apprenticeships vary from 1 – 4 years depending on the level of your programme
  • NHS Lothian is committed to paying all Apprentices the Scottish National Living Wage
  • In addition to the learning, you will do on the job, you will undertake education provided by a college to learn specific skills and expand your underpinning knowledge.  This will include attending scheduled study days, as well as self-directed study in your own time.
  • All Apprenticeships within NHS Lothian are permanent positions, meaning you will continue in your role on completion of the programme.
