What are Orthotics and Prosthetics?
The SMART Centre provides a wide range of rehabilitation technology services for the South East of Scotland, covering Lothian, Fife and the Borders. These include mobility and postural services (wheelchairs and special seating), prosthetics, orthotics, environmental controls, blue badge independent mobility assessment (Edinburgh only), custom design service, a disabled living centre and gait analysis service. We also provide a national driving assessment service.
The Orthotics Team assess and provide orthoses – medical devices that fit to the outside of the body. They help people to avoid or recover from injuries, or to live with lifelong conditions.
The Prosthetics Team measures for, manufactures and fits prostheses (artificial limbs) for adults and children with amputation or limb absence.
We have an onsite workshop where our technical team manufacture and repair new and existing prostheses and orthoses.
Orthotics and Prosthetics Technician Role:
Orthotics and Prosthetics Technicians are highly trained individuals responsible for assembling, repairing and undertaking modifications to orthortics/prosthetics components. Within the role you would be responsible for ensuring that general workshop checks are undertaken to ensure health and safety protocols are being met, whilst adhering to quality assurance checks and measures. You will work alongside other technicians in providing a first-class service for the patient groups who are supported by the SMART centre.

What is the education pathway for this role?
The education for this role is delivered over 4-years, where apprentices will undertake their education at college and within the workplace. You will have supported study leave to college to complete the following qualifications, whilst being provided the opportunity within the workplace to evidence your learning:
Year 1 Performing Engineering Operations at SVQ level 2.
Year 2 National Certificate in Engineering Practice
Year 3 & 4 Mechanical SVQ Level 3 (composite engineering)
Once completed you will be awarded a Modern Apprenticeship – Engineering SCQF L7.
Interested in applying?
To be considered for the Apprenticeship programme you must have, National 5 or above in English, Maths and Science at Grade C and above. In addition, it is desirable applicants must have a National 5 or above in a Craft, Design and Technology or Technical Graphics subject.
Please note we will accept applications from candidates who are awaiting their results from recent exams, however, final offers will be based on the applicant passing the subjects at this level.
All candidates must be between 16 – 24 years (or up to 29 if disabled or have lived experience of the care system).
