NHS Lothian Careers – Over 100 Careers: Just One Employer

We are a Living wage Employer (logo)

NHS Lothian as a public sector employer is guided by the Scottish Government’s National Workforce Strategy for Health and Social Care in Scotland. Our local workforce strategy, the Staff Experience and Engagement Framework, is an exemplar of Fair Work and is at the heart of delivering our Health and Social Care Services.

NHS Lothian is a Living Wage employer and, as such, the lowest available salary translates into an hourly rate which is above the Real Living Wage rate. As an organisation, we do not support Zero Hours contracts but have flexibility in working hours through our Staff Bank.   We also do not support the use of fire and rehire arrangements.

We work in partnership with our trade union and professional organisations, an example of this is the national Once for Scotland Workforce policies, developed in partnership between Scottish Government, NHS Employers and staff-side organisations. These policies promote NHS Scotland as a modern, exemplar employer; showcasing our core values, our commitment to family friendly working practices, and promoting consistent good employment policy and practice that supports fair recruitment, retention and workforce development.

As an exemplar Fair Work employer, we are committed to advancing equalities in NHS Lothian this is demonstrated through our Equality and Human Rights Strategy and Advancing Equalities Action Plan.

As part of the national outcomes identified in the National Workforce Strategy, NHS Lothian will strive to do all that we can within the powers available to us to promote fair working practices which attract and retain the best candidates into Health and Social Care.

Carers Passport

NHS Lothian has introduced a Carers Passport which is intended to help support staff with caring responsibilities manage their work and caring responsibilities. Completion of the passport is voluntary, and it designed to be completed with reference to the NHS Scotland Workforce Policies which support work life balance e.g., Flexible Work Pattern, Flexible Work Location and Special Leave.

Disability Passport

NHS Lothian has introduced a Disability Passport which is intended to guide a conversation between the staff member and their line manager to find the best ways to reduce barriers and enable staff to thrive in their roles.

It provides a framework within which to discuss the staff member’s disability and what changes/adjustments can be made at work to assist

them. Completion of the passport is voluntary, and it is designed to be completed with reference to NHS Lothian’s Reasonable Adjustment Guidance. The passport and Reasonable Adjustments Guidance can be found on the For disabled applicants page.
