Theatres and Recovery

Theatres and Recovery within NHS Lothian is a large, diverse and cutting-edge directorate providing specialist, regional and national surgery on four sites within Edinburgh and West Lothian. We also undertake complex robotic surgery. We have dedicated education leads on our 3 main sites and offer a comprehensive induction programme and well as education and development opportunities for Band 3-7 nurses and ODPs.  These include the National Progression Award for Band 3 nurses, Assistant Perioperative Practice course for Band 4 nurses, Perioperative Practice Course for new registered nurses and the Anaesthetic Practitioner Course for nurses wishing to upskill in the role of anaesthetics. The team also support existing staff to progress in the role as Operating Department Practitioner (ODP).

Western General Hospital (11 theatres/3 recovery areas)

The Western General is a leading hospital in the treatment of Cancer. These theatres provide a variety of day case procedures, emergency and large complex surgery for a variety of urology, colorectal and breast surgery. We are also the leading centre for robotic surgery.

St Johns Hospital (12 Theatres/2 recovery areas)

St Johns Hospital theatres provide surgery for multiple specialties including orthopaedic, ophthalmology, general, gynaecology, urology but specialise in ENT, maxillofacial, obstetrics, burns and plastic surgery. They also provide a regional service for head and neck major surgery.

Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (28 theatres/4 recovery areas)

These 28 theatres undertake specialist elective and emergency surgery in general, neurosurgery, vascular, obstetrics, liver and kidney transplant, cardiothoracic, orthopaedic and trauma surgery.  The Royal Infirmary is also a major trauma centre supporting the South East Scotland major trauma network.   We also undertake robotic surgery in general, gynaecology and thoracic surgery.

Princess Alexander Eye Pavilion (3 theatres and recovery)

Provides a combination of emergency and elective ophthalmology surgery.
