Rheumatology & Dermatology
Within the Acute Medicine Wards the Western General provides inpatient care to Dermatology patients who are requiring extensive treatments that cannot be administered in the community.
A specialised Day Unit provides an Infusion Service for both Rheumatology and Dermatology patients alongside Gastroenterology (GI) patients.
Rheumatology care has advanced to a mainly outpatient model in Lothian with only Acute and Newly diagnosed patients admitted for inpatient treatments.
Diabetes & Metabolic Unit.
The Diabetes and Endocrinology Team deliver both inpatient and outpatients at the WGH. The Diabetes Specialist Nurses (DSN) work within the wider Multidisciplinary team to provide support and education to people with Diabetes empowering them to self-manage the condition. The DSN role is varied and includes supporting a variety of workstreams that including inpatient and outpatient care, a busy telephone helpline and the education of both patients and health care professionals.
Endocrine Investigations and treatment are predominantly delivered within the Metabolic Unit at the WGH by a team of Registered Nurses and Clinical Support workers who work closely with the Endocrine Nurse Specialist and the wider Multidisciplinary team.
Outpatient Services
We have several large outpatient departments which support almost all specialities seen within the hospital. Patients are referred directly from their GP, cross referred from other specialities or routine follow up after discharge. An extremely busy department seeing over 2000 patients each week.
