Regional Infectious Diseases Unit

We are the Regional Unit for an extremely large and widespread area of the East of Scotland- from the Borders to Tayside.

We admit patients from multiple areas including:

  • Direct GP referrals.
  • All NHS Lothian front door assessment areas intensive care unit (ICU)/Neurology
  • Our own out-patient department
  • Chalmers Sexual Health Clinic
  • Following review by our Mobile Infection Ward Round (available on all 3 sites)

Our on-call medical team also review patients on the day where possible trying to prevent admission to hospital. The Lothian wide Travel Clinic support community’ spoke ‘services is based on the WGH site. The OPAT service provides IV antimicrobial therapy on an out­ patient basis for patients who require short or long-term IV therapy and but are well enough to not require inpatient stay.

We are also equipped to admit and care for patients who may have acquired highly infectious diseases such as MERs or Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers such as Ebola.

There are advanced practice opportunities working in areas such as HIV, Blood Bourne Virus & Hep C.
