Outpatients

Outpatients and Associated Services (OAS) manage outpatient clinics in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Lauriston Building, Western General Hospital and St John Hospital in Livingston. These departments support all specialities seen within the hospitals resulting in a variety of opportunities and experiences for Nurses working within these areas.

RIE

Various Outpatient Departments within the RIE & Lauriston Building hosting multiple Specialties. The nursing staff work within a multidisciplinary workforce assisting in diagnostics tests, delivering core and direct treatments.  Focus on Well-being and health workforce with opportunities for career development and progression

  • OPD 1,2 &3

Host the following specialties – Scottish Liver Transplant, Sleep Medicine, Cardio-Thoracic, Diabetes, Endocrinology, Haematology, Medicine & Acute Services, Respiratory & Hypertension Clinics which includes a 24-hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring Service which is delivered by the core clinic nurse team.

  • OPD 4

General Surgery; Hepatobiliary; Gastro-intestinal & Hepatitis C; Vascular; GI Cancer; Bariatric; Oncology; Renal & Transplant; Haematology and Endocrinology. Minor surgery procedures and specialty vascular dressings are supported by nurses within the department along with Liver scans.

Orthopaedics, elective and trauma referrals. Orthotics

  • Reproductive Health Outpatients

Hosts and supports delivery of Gynaecology Oncology, Urogynaecology, Colposcopy, Hysteroscopy, Nurse led cervical screening whilst receiving direct emergency referrals.

Lauriston

  • ENT

Hosts speciality clinics: – Rhinology; General Otology- incorporating balance clinics / tinnitus; Voice clinics- dysplasia / Botox; Head and Neck clinics including a head and neck / radiology Cancer service and Nurse Led pre-operative assessment.

  • Dermatology

Hosts Consultant & Specialist Nurse clinics in General Dermatology, Paediatrics, Phototherapy, Dressing ‘s, Skin Patch testing and urgent cancer referrals including MOH’s surgery.

WGH

The Western General operates from the Main OPD Department in the Anne Ferguson Building and from the 1st floor of the outpatient building and hosts a huge number of specialities including Urology, Rheumatology, Colorectal, Medicine, Haematology and Respiratory. The outpatient also supports the delivery of a flexible cystoscopy service and Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring.

SJH

The SJH team operate within OPD 1, 2, 4 and the Hooper Hand Unit. It also hosts a large range of specialities including Plastic Surgery, Dermatology, Oncology, ENT, Respiratory, Haematology and Orthopaedics. The nurses in this team deliver a Nurse Led plastic Surgery dressing service and phototherapy.

Diabetes & Endocrinology

The Diabetes and Endocrinology Team deliver both inpatient and outpatients at the RIE, WGH and SJH with links to outpatient clinics in ELCH and LCTC.

The Diabetes Specialist Nurses (DSN) work within the wider Multidisciplinary team to provide support and education to people with Diabetes empowering them to self-manage the condition. The DSN role is varied and includes supporting a variety of workstreams that including inpatient and outpatient care, a busy telephone helpline and the education of both patients and health care professionals.

Endocrine Investigations and treatment are predominantly delivered within the Metabolic Unit at the WGH by a team of Registered Nurses and Clinical Support workers who work closely with the wider Multidisciplinary team.
