The Department of Laboratory Medicine provides laboratory services to primary and secondary centres throughout Lothian. These services are currently delivered from 3 sites: the Western General Hospital, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, and St John’s Hospital. Blood Sciences employ approximately 270 staff and covers Biochemistry, Immunology, Serology, Haematology and Blood Transfusion.
A Modern Apprenticeship in Healthcare Science
As a Modern Apprentice – Biomedical Support Worker you would work as part of a multidisciplinary team to undertake a range of routine and non-routine clinical laboratory support duties including sample processing, storage and retrieval, assigning investigation and test codes within the laboratory information management system, preparation of complex reagents, and use of basic analysers and equipment for example centrifuges and pipettes. You would also be responsible for stock control which include reagents and reporting any issues to ensure consumables are available.

This Modern Apprenticeship programme covers 2 years, and you will gain a SVQ Laboratory associated technical activities Level 3 (SCQF Level 7) and a HNC Applied Science. You will embed this learning into practice whilst developing valuable skills and experiences. - To be between 16 to 24 years of age (or 29 is you are care experienced or have a disability).
- Higher Chemistry and Biology as well as a National 5 in Maths at C grade or above. Or an NC Applied Science.
