Mental Health Services
East Lothian provides a wide range of community-based services to those who have a mental illness or a learning disability.
Mental Health Care When It Counts Service
The CWIC Mental Health team provide a short-term programme of care for those who are suffering from a mental health crisis that does not require hospital admission or the intensity of IHTT. Providing advice and support this is a nurse and Occupational Therapy led service.
Community Mental Health Team
The Community Mental Health Team supports people who have Mental Health problems for example Personality Disorder, Schizophrenia or Bipolar Affective disorder. CMHT referrals should be for people who may have a greater complexity to their mental health then primary care can provide for, which requires a multi-disciplinary approach.
The multidisciplinary team include Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Support Workers, Psychology, Psychiatry, Peer Support and the Art Therapies. The team can provide a range of interventions and care and treatment. The team provide holistic care and aim to support people with their physical, emotional and social wellbeing.

Intensive Home Treatment Team
The IHTT provide an intensive treatment programme for those suffering from an acute mental illness as an alternative to a hospital admission. The team also provide support to people in the transition from a hospital stay to going home and receiving support from the CMHT. This service is nurse led with support from Consultant Psychiatrists and Doctors in training.
Older Adult Mental Health
The Older Adult Mental Health Team provide specialist care and support to people who suffer from a mental health disorder. They specialise in both organic and functional mental health illnesses, providing support and care to those residing in care homes, and education to those caring for residents.
The team also provides a ‘Duty Nurse’ service where a nurse will triage and assess emergency situations. The team is fully multi-disciplined comprising of Psychiatrists, Nurses, Occupational Therapist and Psychology. They also work closely with Social Work, Care Home Team and other community based and voluntary services.
Substance Use Service
The Substance Use Service provides community-based support to individuals in relation to substance use which includes alcohol and illicit substances.
The team uses a multi-disciplinary approach and is composed of a Consultant Psychiatrist, nursing staff inclusive of non-medical prescribers, occupational therapy with close links to social work and psychological therapies. Joint work/support is carried out with external and voluntary based community services.
The Substance Use Service offer support to individuals in relation to mental health and utilise a trauma informed approach.
