The Orchard Clinic is a purpose built Medium secure Forensic Unit serving the South East of Scotland and beyond. Examples of current initiatives which nursing staff lead or are involved in include, Risk Assessment, CAT therapy, Nurse Prescribing, Venepuncture and Clozapine Clinic, Physical Health Clinic, QI initiatives, Smoking Cessation , PMVA Teaching, Groupwork and the Nurse Therapy Team.
Adult and Mental Health Nursing at HMP Addiewell and HMP Edinburgh
The prison nurses’ roles is varied from a generalist role to more specific specialist roles which may include general, mental health and substance misuse. As a prison healthcare nurse, you will work as part of multidisciplinary team delivering primary care, including triage and walk-in direct access, as well as inpatient care in some instances.
With the ever increasing ageing prison population prison nurses often provide palliative and end of life care and support people with complex long-term conditions, often further complicated by substance misuse and/or pre-existing mental ill-health
Adult and Mental Health Nursing in Police Custody
The police custody and forensic medical nursing team provide health care services in police custody suites. They are responsible for conducting clinical assessments, identifying and implementing appropriate interventions, collecting forensic samples and providing advice and guidance to detainees and police staff. They are also responsible for maintaining detailed and accurate records to ensure the health, safety and welfare of people held in police custody.
As a nurse in the police custody and forensic medical team, you will triage suspect and complainers by assessing, treating and referring them on as appropriate. You will also conduct mental health assessments, as well as independently prescribed medications. Increasingly, the nursing team are responsible for forensic medical examination – collecting and interpreting forensic samples for future criminal proceedings.
