Community Children’s Nursing Service (CCNS)

The NHS Lothian Community Children’s Nursing Service (CCNS) is a nurse-led service. This service provides a high standard of specialised nursing care to children and young people from birth to their 16th birthday.

Location in Lothian:

CCNS is based centrally at Firrhill House in the Oxgangs area of South Edinburgh, but service provision is across the whole of Lothian.

Specialities Available:

The CCNS promotes safe, effective, and person-centred nursing care in the community setting and provides education and support for those with acute, chronic, complex, exceptional health care needs and end of life care. The nursing care delivered by the CCNS is planned in respect of an individual’s identified health care needs. Such care may be time limited, or it may be prolonged for those with long term health care needs over a period of months or years.

The team consists of Assistant Practitioners, Community Staff Nurses, and Community Children’s Nurses.

Feedback from Current Staff:

“Being able to support children and their families through their healthcare journey from start to finish.”

“It is so rewarding to support the CYP to reach their full potential regardless of their acute, chronic or life-threatening condition.”

“Being able to help patients avoid having to attend hospital or even be admitted”.

What we can offer / development opportunities:

As part of Children’s Services, we provide an extensive induction programme, education frameworks and excellent professional development opportunities.
