The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) in Lothian offer a variety of exciting and challenging placements for student Nurses. CAMHS also has a range of opportunities for newly qualified nursing staff and offers an excellent career pathway in Child and Adolescent nursing for the Mental Health Nurse at any stage of their career.
There are 5 outpatient teams across Lothian which are multidisciplinary , specialist outpatient teams in Learning Disability , Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) , Childhood Sexual Abuse /Trauma (Meadows team) and Paediatric and Psychological Liaison Service (PPALS) . Students in an outpatient team placement can expect experience in:
- Triage of referrals to CAMHS and signposting where appropriate.
- Professional Consultation sessions in the community generic and more specialist teams for children who are Looked after and accommodated (LAC)
- First assessment appointment both planned and emergency.
- opportunities in Group work experience
- Students towards end of training may carry out particular interventions with children, young people and their families, supervised by their Mentor.
- Experience in multi-agency working
- Letter writing and communication
CAMHS Day services and Inpatient service
CAMHS Tier 4 services is situated in the state of the art Royal Hospital for Children and Young People. Our 12 bedded inpatient unit, our day programmes and our Intensive treatment services are located at Little France with the Children’s services but remain part of REAS and the mental Health service.
CAMHS Learning Disability Intensive Treatment Service (LD ITS) – work with children experiencing moderate to severe learning disability, autism and complex challenging behaviour. The team work in the community for example in family homes, schools and respite services. This team offers a unique service.
All CAMHS services work with children and young people from birth until 18th birthday.
