Edinburgh Cancer Centre is a regional unit treating patients from Southeast Scotland, Dumfries, and Galloway & Fife.
The Cancer Assessment Unit triages calls to the helpline, assesses all emergencies, and treats patients appropriately with a view to reducing admissions. It also cares for patients requiring supportive therapies, such as blood transfusions, line insertions, paracentesis, and many other treatments.
Outpatient Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapies (SACT) service for Oncology are provided in Ward 1 and Ward 7 for Haematology, together treating approx. 100 patients per day.
The inpatient wards include acute Oncology, Haematology, Surgical Breast services, inpatient SACT, and Teenage Cancer. This comprise almost 100 beds and, due to the variety of services offered, is very popular with students.
Radiotherapy and Out-patient clinics are a busy area treating and reviewing around 200 patients a day. We also have a Satellite SACT Unit at St. John’s Hospital and the Haemophilia Centre in the RIE.
We are a sought-after area that excels in providing holistic care to patients and their families from diagnosis, through treatment and management of symptoms to palliation and end of life care.
We are supported by a number of Clinical Nurse Specialists and Advanced Nurse Practitioners giving our teams the opportunity to develop, learn and progress.
