Midlothian Community Hospital (MCH) is at the heart of Midlothian Health and Social Care Partnership. It’s a busy community hospital, providing a range of inpatient and outpatient services for people living in Midlothian.
Our outpatient services include various clinics for differing health needs, support groups including smoking cessation, X-ray facilities, and out-of-hours GP care and treatment. The hospital also provides a base for different community teams such as the Lothian Unscheduled Care Service, and the Hospital at Home Team.
The hospital provides inpatient care across five wards for older people who require support with their physical and/or mental wellbeing. This includes intensive medical rehabilitation, complex care for frail elderly and step up/down care, along with mental health assessment for both functional and organic conditions, and complex care for people with advanced dementia.
Roselane Ward
Roselane is an 8 bedded area with single ensuite bedrooms. There is a large communal lounge/dining area, and office space for medical and nursing staff. The ward provides inpatient hospital mental health assessment, care and treatment for anyone over the age of 65 living in Midlothian.
Patients generally have a diagnosis of a functional illness, although there is scope to provide assessment for people in the early stages of an organic condition. Our aim is to provide inclusive assessment and treatment in conjunction with quality care which respects and promotes independence, dignity, comfort and wellbeing for our patients, along with engagement and support for their loved ones.
Pennylane Ward
Pennylane is a 12 bedded area, again with single room ensuite accommodation. Patients have access to a large lounge and dining area, and there is also a themed ‘pub’ which is used for various activities and events.
Nearly all the patients admitted to Penny Lane will have a diagnosis of a moderate or severe dementia. Some are admitted for a period of assessment, and others are admitted to receive specialist complex care, needed to support and manage the challenging symptoms of their illness. We strive to develop the best care and subsequent plans and strategies to minimise stress and distress and capturing effective person-centered interventions and responses which meet the preferences and needs of our patients.
We work closely with loved ones and work collaboratively wherever possible. Both Roselane and Pennylane have access to a beautiful shared garden. A range of activities are coordinated by the activities coordinators for each ward.
Support and Clinical Facilitation
Midlothian Community Hospital has a dedicated Education Facilitator, who will support with all pre and post registration learning requirements and needs for all staff within MCH.
We will aim for you to work with a named mentor/ buddy as much as possible, however all our Nurses are able to support you, so there will always be someone to help, guide and feedback to you on your practice. You will have the opportunity to identify any learning opportunities, along with getting support for any aspect of work you may have.
