Ward Assistants – Acute Services

We have both full-time and part-time jobs available on a permanent basis, with a variety of shift patterns to offer flexibility across days, nights, weekends, early shift, late shifts and school hours.. The Ward Assistant is an essential part of the ward team. Works with indirect supervision within multi-disciplinary team, providing a clinical and clerical support service to nursing staff at ward level.

Under indirect supervision of trained nurse the post holder will:

  • Receive, make and action telephone enquiries and refer to appropriate personnel. demonstrate effective communication with patients, relatives and carers
  • Represent the ward in a friendly and welcoming manner
  • Assist in coordinating discharges by organising transport, liaising with outside agencies and ensuring discharge letters to G.P are correctly completed prior to dispatch
  • Obtaining, transmitting and storage of information relating to patient care
  • Assist in ordering and maintenance of ward stock and ensuring supplies are at the predetermined level
  • Conduct regular inspection of ward furnishings and equipment and arrange    repair/replacement in liaison with the Ward Manager
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient records at all times
  • Contact and arrange repair and maintenance work with Estates, checking on regular intervals that work has been carried out
  • Ensure patients lockers and bed side areas are kept clean and tidy
  • Support the ward staff to ensure environment is kept clean and tidy
  • In liaison with nursing staff to ensure patient property/ valuables are locked away and disclaimer  completed. Items are deposited with cashier as per Division Policy
  • Undertake clinical duties as required by the Senior / Ward Charge Nurse
  • To assist nursing colleagues, in times of absence, and increased activity
  • Work within defined standards, protocols, policies and procedures for the ward, directorate and NHS Lothian including the development of risk assessments to ensure delivery of the highest level of client care at all times
